Breathe

Breathe in.
Now breathe out,
and draw back in.
Feel the heavy universe
expand your lungs

Look up,
around.
Can you see it?
The air, I mean.

No?

Neither can I.
Or the birds…
They can’t see it either,
and yet they swim its blue
and ride its currents

So why do you
trust your eyes?
Why do you despair
when they tell you all is lost,
when they are blind
even to your next breath?

So breathe.
Rest.
Know that hope,
invisible as air,
sits with you
in the night.

And know that
this broken world
was made for
broken people,
like us.
