To Wonder

In the fields, in the dark
have you felt the bass notes
of the universe, heavy and insistent?
The faint reverberations
of the very beginning of things?

Perhaps you wonder at
long-dead distant stars?
Light that has outlived its source
for no reason at all but to fall
gently on your unknowing eyes.

Do you feel the brush of atoms
older than time against
your goosebumped skin
as the icy waters part
around your weary limbs?

But, child of dirt and light,
of breath and nebulae,
have you wondered
who is doing the wondering,
behind your eyes?

Because, I’m told,
100 billion neurons burst
to life just so you could read
this
next
line

So perhaps ,
in the known universe
the most remarkable thing is
that you are.
Here.
Now.
To wonder.
