Arrogant poem

It is a serious thing to suggest,
but perhaps there are times
when Dylan Thomas is wrong.

Perhaps, sometimes,
going gentle in to
that goodnight
is right.

Perhaps, raw and exhausted,
on the carpet
at the foot of the stairs
with your fists too weak to rage
you might see for the first time
that, although it is dark,
the light is not dying
and the little you have
is enough to see you home…

…and your destination
is not a sad, lonely height
but a warm embrace,
tea with laughter.
And rest.
